This is one of the most common questions about inherited or unwanted gold, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one: melting your old gold and pouring it straight into a new ring is physically possible, but it's not what happens in most professional workshops, and there are good technical reasons why.
The short version of what's actually possible
Gold can be melted at home or in a small workshop with basic equipment — a crucible, a torch or kiln, and a mould. In that narrow sense, yes, your old gold "can" be melted down and reused. The complication is what's mixed in with it. A ring, chain, or brooch is rarely pure alloyed gold on its own; it usually contains solder from repairs, other metals from claws or fittings, sometimes remnants of stones or glue, and wear-related surface contamination. Melting all of that together and pouring it into a new casting mould is where things go wrong.
Why most jewellers refine rather than re-melt directly
Solder contamination
Every repair, resize, or joint your old piece has ever had involved solder, and jewellery solder is formulated to melt at a lower temperature than the surrounding gold — which is exactly why it's useful for joining metal without damaging the piece around it. That lower melting point comes from added metals, commonly zinc, cadmium, tin, and sometimes indium or germanium in small amounts. When old gold is melted down as a whole, that solder melts into the mix and stays there. The result is gold with an altered, unpredictable composition rather than the clean alloy a jeweller is trying to work with.
Alloy mismatch
Gold jewellery is rarely pure gold; it's an alloy blended with metals like copper, silver, zinc, or palladium to achieve a specific carat, colour, and working hardness. An inherited piece might be 22ct, 18ct, or 9ct, in yellow, white, or rose gold, and quite possibly a mix of several if it's been repaired or has soldered-on elements over the years. Melting several different alloys together produces gold of an unknown, inconsistent composition — not a clean 18ct yellow gold a jeweller can reliably cast or hallmark.
Porosity and casting failures
Even when the metal composition is close enough, unrefined scrap tends to cast badly. Contaminants and oxidised base metals in the mix create gas and inclusions during melting, which show up in a finished cast piece as porosity — tiny voids or pits in the metal. A porous casting is structurally weaker, can be harder to polish to a good finish, and is more prone to cracking under the stress of setting stones or ordinary wear. Investment (lost-wax) casting, the method used for most fine jewellery, is particularly sensitive to unclean scrap for exactly this reason.
Practical risk versus benefit
Put together, these three problems mean that melting unrefined scrap directly into a new cast piece carries a real risk of a flawed, weaker result — for very little practical gain, since the customer usually can't tell the difference between "your literal atoms, refined" and "gold of equivalent value, freshly alloyed." Refining removes the risk almost entirely, which is why it's the default approach for most UK workshops handling redesign work.
What "using your gold" usually really means
When a jeweller says they'll use your old gold in a new piece, in most cases what actually happens is this: the old piece is weighed, its carat is tested or assayed, and its fine gold content is calculated. It's then sent to a specialist refiner, who separates out the pure gold chemically or electrolytically, removing the solder, other alloying metals, and any contamination. What comes back is pure, verified gold, which is then re-alloyed to the correct carat and colour for your new design and cast or fabricated as normal.
The value of your old gold — its weight in fine gold terms, at the current gold price, minus refining costs — is then credited against the cost of your new piece. So you're not getting the literal metal from your grandmother's ring poured into your new pendant; you're getting gold of equivalent worth, cleanly processed, with the value of your old piece reducing what you pay for new material. Most customers find this an entirely reasonable trade once it's explained, because the emotional continuity of "her gold, in some form, in my ring" is preserved even if the physical atoms have been through a refinery. It's also worth knowing this is standard, not a workaround — it's how legitimate gold recycling has worked at industrial and workshop scale for a long time, precisely because it's the reliable way to get clean, castable metal from mixed scrap.
When direct re-melting genuinely happens
There are cases where a jeweller will melt and work your actual old gold directly, without refining. This is mostly confined to hand-fabrication rather than casting — a plain band forged and shaped by hand from a single, relatively clean piece of old gold, for example, where there's no complex casting process to fail and the metal's history can be traced with more confidence. A skilled goldsmith working this way can sometimes take an old, simple piece — a worn wedding band with minimal repair history — and reforge it directly into a new simple shape.
Even here, most goldsmiths will still test the metal first and may add a small amount of fresh alloy to correct the carat or improve workability, and they'll be candid if the piece has too much repair or solder history to work safely without refining. It's a genuinely available option for the right piece, but it's the exception rather than the default, and it generally only suits simple, low-complexity designs rather than pieces with claws, stone settings, or fine detail.
Sentimental alternatives when direct re-melting isn't right
If your piece isn't a good candidate for direct re-melting but you want more than "equivalent value, refined," there are middle-ground options worth discussing with a jeweller. A small, untouched section of the original metal — a piece of an old band, say — can sometimes be set into a new design as a visible or hidden element, rather than melted at all: soldered as an inlay, used as a lining inside a new ring, or set as a small tag or charm alongside the new piece. Old stones, if they're in good condition, are almost always reset rather than replaced, which preserves a much more literal piece of the original. And some workshops will offer to send you a small offcut or filing of the old metal as a keepsake, separate from the redesign process entirely.
None of these fully substitutes for "the exact same gold, melted and reused," but they're honest, achievable ways to keep a physical thread connecting old and new, without pretending a process the workshop can't reliably deliver.
